Adventure with me on Instagram

This time of year, the last dazzling storms and mo This time of year, the last dazzling storms and morning frosts remind us that, while it’s officially Spring, the earth is still waking in her unhurried way.

I love this season.

For me, it’s a liminal space where some days (the colder, wetter ones) I can tidy up indoor projects, and other days (the tank-top ones) I can begin to seed my winter dreams.

Marking the plots of my new garden, learning to sew dresses for my girls, booking tickets to that music festival, and so on!

What dreams are you excited to bring to life this spring?

And remember to pace yourself in this season of “spring frenzy”! It’s easy to get carried away, and, we have high summer for that :)
🌸 I MADE A DISCOVERY ON THE SPRING EQUINOX YEST 🌸 I MADE A DISCOVERY ON THE SPRING EQUINOX YESTERDAY! 🌱

You can turn leftover Hamentashen dough into cut-out sugar cookies! (Link in bio for Hamentaschen cookies ☝️)

As me and the girls were cutting circles out of the dough to fill with jam, they said, “why can’t we make other shapes?”

It was true… the dough was very much like one for cut-out sugar cookies, but I’d only seen it as a pastry crust.

So when Cora said she wanted to celebrate the Spring Equinox by wearing fancy, flowery dresses 👗💐 and making cut-out cookies, we tried with the same poppy pocket dough👩‍🍳.

And they came out perfectly!!! 🌈🌲🌟💚🦋🎉

We even made a little birds nest with eggs, which we agreed to put at the base of a grandmother maple for our creature friends 🐺🦌🐦🐿️🦊🦝🐰 (since no one could agree on which humans would eat it 🤣).

A little bit of dye-free sprinkles for a festive touch and ta-da!

You can also find the recipe for my “Poppy Seed Pockets” (hamentashen) in my new book Seasonal Family Almanac

Let me know in the comments if/how you celebrated the first day of spring! ☀️
Whether you celebrate St. Patrick’s Day ☘️ o Whether you celebrate St. Patrick’s Day ☘️ or not (🙋🏼‍♀️), this Easy, Amazing Irish Soda Bread recipe is worth making year-round 🍞 (recipe link in profile 👆).

Here’s why...

🍃 You can add nettle and/or spirulina powder to the batter to make it GREEN and more nutritious!

⏰ You can assemble this “quick bread” in under 30 minutes because you don’t have to wait for it to rise. The buttermilk, baking powder and baking soda do that work.

🍋 You can make homemade buttermilk (and skip buying a carton only to have a bunch leftover).

In fact, you probably already have all the ingredients to make the non-green version (see the ingredient list in the recipe link 👆)!

Don’t forget to lather butter on your slice and hide the rest from the leprechauns, because this recipe is GOLD 🌈🍯.

If you make a gluten-free and/or vegan version I’d love to hear how it turns out! 👂

Happy International Women’s Day! ✨ It took a Happy International Women’s Day! ✨

It took a village of (mostly) women, many of whom are moms, to create Seasonal Family Almanac ❄️🌷☀️🍁

We are so grateful to have been able to call on the wisdom and support of these amazing women to birth this dynamic book into being.

Above all, working with a community of women and mothers allowed us to create an entirely new paradigm of work!

We went to “work” with our babies in utero, nursing, playing around us, and yes, playfully tasting and testing our recipes!

Working primarily with women also allowed us to experience such a deep level of understanding and a desire to care for and uplift each other - much like we receive from Mother Earth!

It’s hard to encapsulate all the female power and energy that brought this book into being, and we can’t wait to share the wisdom and beauty of this village with you soon!

Here are many of the incredible women featured behind the scenes and on the pages:

Did you know 6 of the earliest almanacs published Did you know 6 of the earliest almanacs published in America were written by a black man named Benjamin Banneker?

I stumbled on this in @vashtiharrison ‘s “Little Legends: Exceptional Men in Black History.”

I was obviously thrilled to learn about Banneker because of the connection to my new book’s title (Seasonal Family Almanac)...

but Little Legends has held far more meaning for our family than that.

My daughter took this book out from the library, and we have been enthralled by every biography within.

It is truly an education I never had as a child, and one that is still not comprehensive in my oldest daughter’s elementary school.

Harrison’s book sheds light on how many new ideas, inventions, heroic acts of service and more were sparked by and carried out by black men in our country.

Most were enslaved or born in the Jim Crow era, and still managed to advance culture, science, arts, civil rights, and so on under insane oppression.

Banneker was one of those men.

His almanacs are best known for sharing his detailed calculations around medicine, astronomy, and agriculture.

And he did this despite being largely denied a formal education!

I am hesitant to draw too many correlations between my new book and Banneker’s almanac, though I wish I had known this piece of history so that I could add some mention in the book (let’s get it to the next edition with an update!).

However, Seasonal Family Almanac does include notes on seasonal food and farming, a Daily Lunar Tracker, and recipes for herbal medicine in the hopes of harkening back to the time when Banneker lived.

And we’re still in relationship with the Earth as our clock, our medicine chest, and our pantry.
