Adventure with me on Instagram

I wish I could sum up my recent essay on my Substa I wish I could sum up my recent essay on my Substack about how I tried to get a flip phone before taking my family abroad for months, and how my attempts were thwarted.

About my love-hate relationship with Gollum’s ring, I mean, my smartphone. About how in the end, I dumbed down my smart phone so that I could prioritize being present with my family - and it wasn’t easy (dumbing it down and keeping it dumb!).

How I realized it’s virtually impossible to travel now without a smartphone, and the story about my mother surprising me and my three siblings when I was 11, by taking us all on a trip to Disney World, without a smartphone. (We literally didn’t know we were going until we were sitting on the plane; how’s that for being oblivious?!).

And how on that trip I went on a Back to the Future Ride where we saw a montage of imagined future activities. One of them showed two people talking to each other on screens. I remember turning to my mom and saying, “Do you really think we’ll be able to do that one day?!”

And how today, it’s nearly impossible for children (and grown-ups) to imagine a world without FaceTime. In my Substack essay, I found and included a picture of my daughter FaceTiming with her Nonna on her birthday when she turned 1. ONE.

And, I include the full checklist for how I dumbed down my phone so you can still function like a normal human in today’s world.

Ok, that’s a pretty decent summary. But the real meat ‘n potatoes is on Substack, where I can write the way I love to write, instead of trying to write for the IG algorithm, which apparently I’m just no good at, or not interested in doing. #sorrynotsorry

Anyway, I hope you pop over there and take a peek and say hiiiii!

Byeeee love you!

Entry 02 from our family’s world schooling trip is Entry 02 from our family’s world schooling trip is live on Substack (link in profile!).

This one’s about the vastly different perceptions the grownups and kids had of our airport hotel room, and how it was a lesson for me on lightening up.

And, the predicament we found ourselves in when we discovered we couldn’t get food anywhere at 11:30 pm, and had bare minimum snacks, and how we each dealt with the situation (it wasn’t butterflies and rainbows).

And some more moments that had me in tears of laughter.

This is for any parent who wants to travel with their kids, for however long and anywhere!

This winter our family of four traded life at home This winter our family of four traded life at home for the road, world-schooling across five countries in Europe - mostly, Italia!

I’ve been re-reading my journal and writing stories from our adventure, including moments of deep belly laughter, profound insight, and yes, lots of messiness and meltdowns.

If you’re curious about what it looked like for us to learn, work, play, make new friends, cook, eat, and travel abroad, follow along!

I’ll be sharing these stories (and limited photos) in short-essay form through my newsletter — emmafrisch.substack.com — which feels like the best format to honor our experience and tell the tales!

I’ll share reminders here every now and then, and hope you join me in my writing (and recipe!) corner.

Maybe kids are picky for a reason…! 🥦😝 In Ep. 03 Maybe kids are picky for a reason…! 🥦😝

In Ep. 03 on @dinnerlastnightpod, Liesha McKinley-Barnett (@theoaklandgirl) shared an amazing tip on how to respond when your kids say “no” to something you serve…and often, get them to eat it.

So I tried it at home-and it worked!

Can you think of examples you’ll try this with? I’d love to hear!👇

Eeeeeeeeee!!! 🎉

It’s amazing how this simple question leads to rich conversations about family life, daily rhythms and culture.

And how this daily ritual (er, um, struggle?!) connects us ALL.

OK—What did YOU have for dinner last night?! 👂👇

There was a shared understanding at Beyoncé’s #cow There was a shared understanding at Beyoncé’s #cowboycartertour last Thursday night with my girls, @dimityps and @janablankenship1 👑🐝❤️.

Don’t play small: SLAY.

Beyoncé has the uncanny ability to own her goddess status, and to encourage her fans to do the same for themselves.

And perhaps even more inspiring is how she extends this notion to one of the most relatable, overlooked — and yet powerful, miraculous, extraordinary — experiences of humankind: motherhood.

Her message is clear: RAISING CHILDREN IS THE WORK OF A GODDESS.

Would you see Beyoncé live (even if you had tix in the nosebleed section?):
